BROADWAY WORKSHOPS

Broadway Across Borders – Bosnia has launched an inclusive and inspiring series of musical theatre workshops that engage participants of all ages across the country—from children and teens to adults and professional artists. At the heart of these workshops is a commitment to authentic self-expression, cultural diversity, and personal storytelling. Participants are invited to explore their voices, bodies, and imaginations in a safe and supportive environment, regardless of prior experience. In past partnership with the U.S. Embassy Sarajevo’s BOLD program, the initiative has become a vital part of the region’s cultural and educational landscape, using the performing arts to cultivate empathy, self-confidence, and a sense of purpose.

More than training in performance, these workshops teach collaboration, adaptability, and creative problem-solving. Each group becomes a dynamic team where individuals discover their unique strengths—some structure the process, others write or perform—all contributing to a shared artistic goal. The experience is about learning to build together: forming teams that respect differences, find common ground, and pursue imaginative solutions. By breaking old patterns and embracing new perspectives, these workshops foster not just theatrical growth, but life skills that empower individuals to shape their communities with compassion, courage, and creativity.

"My Voice Matters"

My Voice Matters is a dynamic musical theatre program designed to help young people rediscover their voices—both artistically and personally—in the aftermath of social disruption and disconnection. Originally developed to support high school students transitioning back to in-person learning after COVID-19, the program creates a safe and inclusive space for self-expression, creativity, and emotional growth. Through songwriting, movement, improvisation, and performance-based activities, participants engage with themes of identity, resilience, and connection. Originally supported by the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its LEAD program, My Voice Matters empowers youth to articulate their thoughts and feelings, rebuild confidence, and develop meaningful relationships with their peers.

The program blends professional theatre practices with playful exploration, offering training in voice, movement, storytelling, and collaboration. Participants co-create original pieces that reflect their lived experiences, learning not only artistic skills but also the value of teamwork, discipline, and empathy. Each session emphasizes trust, imagination, and personal agency—encouraging students to listen deeply, communicate honestly, and embrace difference. The culmination is not a polished performance, but a shared celebration of discovery and growth. At its heart, My Voice Matters is about helping young people believe in the power of their ideas and their ability to shape the world around them.

Moja Pjesma ("My Song")

Moja Pjesma (“My Song”) is a dynamic musical performance initiative that brings live music and creative inspiration to communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Designed to reach beyond major urban centers, the project features concerts and workshops that engage older youth and emerging artists in meaningful artistic exploration. Through music-driven programming, Moja Pjesma provides access to high-quality performance experiences while encouraging participants to find their own artistic voices. Whether on stage or in rehearsal, the focus is on deepening musical expression, building confidence, and fostering a love of performance through direct engagement with the craft.

Originally launched in 2019 as part of the U.S. Embassy Sarajevo BiH Broadway Program, Moja Pjesma has evolved into a platform for developing young talent and cultivating future cultural leaders. The second phase, My Song II, expanded its reach through performances and workshops held in public spaces “Kultura na ulice,” empowering participants to share their creativity with broader audiences. These workshops emphasize vocal technique, musical interpretation, and ensemble collaboration, helping performers refine their skills while developing empathy, discipline, and artistic integrity.

Moja Pjesma affirms the transformative power of music and positions emerging artists as vital voices in shaping Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cultural future.

PRODUCTION

Tick, Tick...Boom!

Initiated by Broadway Across Borders – Bosnia program director Sanjin Arnautović, Tick, Tick… Boom!  is a groundbreaking musical theatre project that has energized and expanded the cultural landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Centered on the story of a young composer striving to overcome personal and professional obstacles, the production delivers an empowering message to young Bosnians: that every setback can be a stepping stone toward realizing one’s dreams. What makes the project especially resonant is its connection to the lived experiences of its young creative team, turning personal struggle into shared inspiration.

More than a performance, Tick, Tick… Boom! is a platform for social change, blending activism with artistry. Arnautović champions the intersection of theatre and entrepreneurship as a force for transformation, encouraging young people to believe in their power to shape their future. The project has already made a visible impact—sparking dialogue, personal growth, and renewed motivation within its audiences. Looking ahead, it seeks to build a national network of theatre-minded, socially engaged youth, foster the development of locally created musicals, and establish a vibrant, collaborative community dedicated to using the performing arts as a catalyst for change.

LECTURES AND MASTERCLASSES

Broadway Across Borders brings leading musical theatre artists from the United States to Bosnia to share their expertise and inspire the next generation of performers, creators, and theatre-makers. This mission has taken shape through a dynamic collaborations with the University of Sarajevo and the Performing Arts Academy, where American theatre professionals have led a series of immersive workshops designed for students in the Department of Acting. Workshops are centered on the intricate craft of musical theatre performance, offering students an opportunity to explore the storytelling potential of song through a series of carefully crafted exercises. Participants delve into lyric analysis, emotional connectivity, and the process of “acting through song,” learning how to infuse their performances with authenticity, clarity, and dramatic intention. Emphasis is also placed on song selection, guiding students to identify material that best suited their voices and artistic sensibilities while developing a deeper understanding of the relationship between text and music.

In addition to performance training, Broadway Across Borders has expanded its educational offerings through interdisciplinary workshops that bring together students from design, production, and acting programs. This collaborative lab explores the process of building musical theatre from the ground up, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across artistic disciplines. Participants examine the unique storytelling challenges presented by musicals and learned how each element—from lighting and scenic design to music and direction—contributes to the narrative arc. The workshops highlight the value of ensemble thinking, encouraging students to move beyond their individual roles and embrace the shared responsibility of theatrical storytelling. These experiences reflect Broadway Across Borders’ commitment to cross-cultural exchange and artistic development, using the language of musical theatre to foster creativity, connection, and innovation.
